A Year Untried

Robert Marshall Offord authored a book entitled Heart-song: A Volume of Verse
It was published by New York Observer in 1895.  One of his poems is entitled “A Year Untried.”

A year untried before me lies,
what it shall bring of strange surprise
Of joy or grief, I cannot tell…

It is true: we do not know what this new year will bring, or if we will even have a whole new year.  “Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth” (Proverbs 27:1).

We are admonished in the Scriptures:  “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit’; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life?
It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that’” (James 4:13-15).

Since there is so much about the future that is unknown, what is our response?  Should we stay in our homes and despair?  That is not a very pleasant thought!

The best response is to trust – to trust God!

That’s what Offord suggests:

A year untried before me lies, what it shall bring of strange surprise
Of joy or grief, I cannot tell; Since God my Father knoweth well.
I make it no concern of mine but leave it all with love Divine.

That’s what Jesus teaches.  See Matthew 6:25-34.

Why should we trust God?  For two reasons:  (1) He is trustworthy.  He keeps His promises.  He is faithful.  (2) He loves us.  He cares for us.  He wants the very best for us.

In fact, He loves us so much that He gave His Son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins so that we can be saved from our sins and receive eternal life (John 3:16; Romans 6:23).  No matter what happens in this life, through Christ we have eternal life!

God will save and give eternal life to those who place their faith and trust in Jesus (Acts 16:30-31), turn from sin in repentance (Acts 17:30-31), confess Him before men (Romans 10:9-10), and are baptized (immersed) into Christ for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38).  He will continue to cleanse from sin those who continue to walk in the light of His Word (1 John 1:7).

No, we do not know what a year – or even a day – may bring forth.  As Offord states:

The sun may shed no light by day, no stars at night illume my way,
My soul shall still know no affright, since God, in Christ, is all my light.
Though all the earthly lamps grow dim,
he walks in light who walks with Him.

“He walks in light who walks with Him.”

We do not know what the future holds, but we know Who holds the future!  And because of Christ, the future is as bright as the promises of God!

Won’t YOU accept His offer of salvation and eternal life and walk with Him in the light?
