Buyer's Remorse
In a
time of extravagance and waste, Calvin Coolidge became
President. Born
in Plymouth, Vermont, on July 4, 1872, Coolidge was
the son of a village storekeeper,
and a man determined to preserve
the old moral and economic precepts in the midst of
great material prosperity.
President
Coolidge's conservatism revealed itself in every
aspect of his life, including his well-known
frugality. Knowing
of his respect for his bankroll, his wife, Grace,
nevertheless fell for the blandishments of a traveling
book salesman and bought one
of those 1800-page "home medical advisers" for
something like fifteen dollars (a lot
of money in those days).
No sooner than the salesman departed, Grace
began to have grave misgivings.
"What will Calvin say?" "How am I going to tell
him?" Finally,
she decided to put the book down on the library table,
and await the explosion which would follow when her
husband found it.
To her amazement, nothing was said about it at
all. Finally,
after several days, Mrs. Coolidge opened the book and
found that her husband had written a note on the
fly-leaf: "I have looked carefully through all
1800 pages of this work," it read, "and find no
cure whatever for a SUCKER.”
"Buyer's
remorse" is not unknown to most of us.
"WHY did I buy this?" "I could
have used my money more wisely."
Such mistakes are seldom of such magnitude to
really threaten us financially, but they certainly
leave us disappointed with
ourselves and our choices!
An
Old Testament prophet once asked, "Why do you
spend your money for
that which is not bread, and your labor for that which
does not satisfy?"
This pictures life in its dissatisfaction
and hunger. It's
the condition of the soul apart from God – a sense
of unrewarding, fruitless labor.
The
antidote for an unfulfilled life - is a
willingness to diligently LISTEN to God and COME
to Him (Isaiah 55:1-3).
When THAT decision is made, there will be NO
remorse.*
The
truly abundant, fulfilling life as well as eternal
life to follow comes through a "saving
relationship" with God through Jesus Christ,
His Son
(John 10:10; Mark 10:28-30).
When by faith
(Hebrews 11:6), we repent
of sin
(2 Corinthians 7:9-10), confess
Christ (Romans 10:9-10), and are baptized
(immersed) into Christ (Acts 2:38), our sins are
forgiven and we are added to the family of God.
Then as children of God, we must CONTINUE to
obey our Father's will – He knows what is best!
Jesus
asks, "For what profit is it to a man if he gains
the WHOLE WORLD, and loses his OWN SOUL? Or what will
a man give in exchange for his SOUL?" (Matthew
16:26).
Avoid
"buyer's remorse." Don't "sell
your soul" for those things that are
temporary and worthless.
Give your life to Jesus – you'll never regret it!
God bless you!
