Stranded
James Kim and his wife
Kati, and their two daughters -- 4-year-old Penelope and 7-month-old
Sabine – spent their Thanksgiving holiday in Seattle, WA.
Their plan was to stop and spend the night at the Tu Tu Tun Lodge
on the Rogue River in Oregon, on their way home to San Francisco, CA.
They missed their turn, however, and after checking a road map,
decided to get off and travel a secondary road to their destination.
Then they mistakenly took a fork to the right and started down the
road when their car became stranded due to heavy snow.
The road the Kims had
erroneously taken was a logging road west of Grant’s Pass, OR.
A gate had been closed to block off the logging road in November
because it was considered hazardous, but authorities believe that vandals
apparently cut the lock; and the gate was open.
For a week, the Kims
huddled and ate berries, baby food, and crackers.
They used the car heater intermittently to keep warm until they ran
out of gas. Then they burned
their car tires to keep warm. When
they ran out of food, Kati, who is still nursing their baby, breast-fed
4-year-old Penelope, too.
After a week stuck in
the wilderness and no sign of rescue, James Kim decided that he had to do
something to try to save his family. He
struck out to find help. Hungry,
weak, and wearing only street clothes, Kim trudged through the snow for
ten miles over sharp ledges, through bristling forests, and through
freezing creek waters. “He
was very motivated … he traveled a long way,” Josephine County
Undersheriff Brian Anderson said.
On
December 4, two days after James left his family in search of help, Kati
and their daughters were found, in good condition.
Sadly, two days later, James Kim was found dead in a ravine.
Autopsy results determined that he died of exposure and hypothermia.
He died trying to find help for his family.
What a testimony to the love of a man for his family!
James Kim reminds us
of another Man who gave His life so that YOU and I might be saved...
JESUS
came a long way – from heaven, in fact.
It was a difficult way that he traversed to save us because it led
to a Roman cross. On the
cross, Jesus died for the sins of the world (1 John 2:2).
What a testimony to the love of Jesus for you and for me!
“This is how God
showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that
we might live through Him” (1 John 4:9).
This life – ETERNAL
LIFE – awaits those who will: believe
in Him (Acts 16:30-31), repent
of sin (Acts 17:30-31), confess
Him before men (Romans 10:9-10), and be baptized
(immersed) in His name for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38).
He will CONTINUE to cleanse those who CONTINUE to follow Him (1
John 1:7).
When
WE were “stranded” in sin and without hope, He came to our rescue.
He DIED so that we might LIVE. What
love!
How will YOU
respond?
