A Devoted Son

She didn’t want to leave her home because she didn’t think the hurricane would be that big of a deal.

She was wrong.

Johnny Lauder’s mother is 84-years-old with one leg and wheelchair bound.  As Hurricane Ian approached, she refused to leave her home in Naples, Florida.  She didn’t see the need for her son or grandsons to stay with her.  But Lauder and his sons stayed nearby just in case.

Hurricane Ian struck the southwest Florida coast causing tremendous flooding.  Johnny’s mother frantically called him on the phone.   She told him that she was sitting in her wheelchair in her home and water was up to her stomach.  “Help me! I’m going to drown!”

About a half-mile away from her home, Lauder was staying in the home of one of his sons.  Floodwaters had grown to 3½ to 4 feet outside his house.  Lauder knew that he needed to get to his mother.  He made sure his sons were safe.  “They went up in an attic crawl space with a way to get out of the roof, if need be, and I jumped out the window and started making my trek to help mom.”

Lauder waded through the floodwaters to his mother’s house.  As he approached her home, he heard her screaming for help.  Lauder entered the home through a window, found his mother, wrapped her up in blankets and set her on a high table.  Then they rode out the storm.

Lauder had instructed his 20-year-old son to come to his grandmother’s house when the water had receded halfway.  When that happened and his son made it to her home, Lauder and his son lifted the grandmother through a window, put her in her wheelchair, and pushed her through the floodwaters to a safe place.

It took 11 hours for Lauder to rescue his mother. *

When we were in a grave condition because of our sins, God sent His one and only Son to rescue us (John 3:16).  God’s Son, Jesus, was devoted to His father and to us, and gave His life for us so that we could be saved (Romans 5:8; John 15:13).

Because of Jesus we can be saved from sin and receive the gift of eternal life if we will only place our faith and trust in Him (Acts 16:30-31), turn from our sins in repentance (Acts 17:30-31), confess Him before men (Romans 10:9-10), and be baptized (immersed) into Him for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38).  Then, as we continue to walk in the light of His Word, the atoning blood of Jesus continues to cleanse us from all sin (1 John 1:7-9).

When we were dying in sin, God’s devoted Son came to our rescue (Galatians 1:4).  He will save you if you will trust and obey Him.
