So That We Could Live

Without a liver transplant, Rick Burdge, age 62, was going to die.  That was the harsh reality of his diagnosis of liver cancer.

So his family began looking for a compatible living donor.  An information letter was produced and broadcasted via Facebook and other media asking for anyone and everyone to consider becoming a liver donor.  Only a piece of the liver of a donor would be needed.  The donor had to meet specific criteria: age 21-59, blood type of O+ or O-, body mass index of less than 35, free of liver disease, hepatitis, and diabetes, and medically healthy.

After several months of searching for a donor but failing to find a match, a suitable donor was found.  The willing, suitable donor was Burdge’s daughter, Tiffany.

In September of 2019, nine-months after the search began, the pair underwent their respective surgeries for a successful liver transplant.

Several days after the transplant surgeries, Tiffany was wheeled into her father’s hospital room.  It was an emotional reunion.  They exchanged I love yous.  Burdge told his loving daughter, a mother of three, that she had saved his life. *

You and I have been diagnosed with a fatal condition: we are sinners and the wages of sin is death (Romans 3:23; 6:23).  Our only chance of survival is for a donor.  The donor must fit the exact qualifications: he must have no sin of his own and he must be willing to die for us.

Only Jesus, the sinless Son of God, was a suitable donor.  He willingly and lovingly gave His life for us so that we could live.

“For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.  He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with Him” (1 Thessalonians 5:9-10).

God will save from sin and give eternal life to those who place their faith and trust in Jesus (Acts 16:30-31), turn from their sins in repentance (Acts 17:30-31), confess Him before men (Romans 10:9-10), and are baptized (immersed) into Christ for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38).  The blood of Jesus will continue to cleanse from sin those who continue to walk in the light of His Word (1 John 1:7-9).

When only a liver transplant would save Rick Burdge’s life, a loving daughter came to his rescue by sharing part of her liver with him.

When only a Divine substitute could deliver us from sin and death, Jesus willing laid down His life for us so that we could live.  And, thanks be to God, there will be a wonderful reunion one day.

Won’t YOU accept His offer of salvation and eternal life on His terms?
